Visions of the North / video installation

This project originated from my experience during the dictatorship in Chile in the 80s when the military junta

tightly controlled information and people resorted to obtaining news via shortwave radio frequencies. Various

international radio services had a program in Spanish specially oriented to Latin America; among the radios

was Radio Pyongyang, a propagandist radio emphasizing the promotion of the Workers' Party of Korea.

The installation is based on video documentation recorded at various points in South Korea from where it is

possible to observe North Korea. In some respect, North Korea is on display from South Korea as the government

installed a series of observatories from where people can watch across the border. Visions of the

North acts as an archive of dispersed pieces attempting to create a distant portrait of a country that lives in

some regard in people's imagination.
